The thing about vi is that even those who are proficient aren't likely to use all of the features available.
I've been using vi and its variants for well over ten years now, and consider myself reasonably proficient in it, but in terms of knowledge of everything you can do with it (particularly with VIm), I am but a neophyte. I can, however, slice & dice files to my heart's content without ever looking at my keyboard. :)
