Yes, you would compile everything in place on your current, running system. At the end you would partition the new space and do a "make installworld" and "make installkernel" and probably a "mergemaster" with the appropriate flags to dump the install into the new partition.


I also believe that "sysinstall" can be invoked on a running system in order to dump an image of itself into a new partition.
