At what time in history, have ppl ever done anything without some sort of compensation (except slavery!). before there were dubloons, it was the barter system. And before that, I suppose the caveman just outright stole what he wanted (which is what the MPAA/RIAA calls all it's customers :)
Whether people do things for compensation is not the point. What DJA was saying is that the compensation doesn't always have to be *money*. And what I'd like to say is that the compensation doesn't have to be *perpetual*. I can be compensated for producing something, while not reasonably expecting to own the thing that I produced.
That is what I said too.
You can work for food. You can work so they'll reciprocate and work for you. That's the barter system. Otherwise, it's money ! If you have another form of compensation, I'd like to hear it ?
And currently, only trade secrets are perpetual. Patents expire, and until recently, so did copyrights. When Mickey Mouse comes under threat of falling into the public domain again (in another 15 years or so ?) I'm sure Disney will pressure Congress to extend it yet again. That's plain wrong.
Though I haven't discusses this portion with my brother, I would hope that he doesn't expect to own his films until hell freezes over. At some stage, Copyright should expire and the work becomes public domain, that's the system we have !
I think that the lack of available business models that would work in a no-IP world doesn't mean a *thing* for whether or not IP is right or not. And, presuming we'd like to have works of the intellect available for our enjoyment and use, there's nothing that says a legal fiction of ownership thereof is the only way to bring them about.
But until a system becomes available that fulfills this promsie, we are stuck with the one we have.
