And society wants something in return.

I thought that society was on my side, and against yours. I thought
that the duration of a copyright has been increasing over the years,
and that obtaining one has become easier. Correct me if I'm wrong. I
often am wrong, but that is the fate of inventors and artists.

Not society, large corporations.
Average Joe in the Street prolly couldn't give a rat's arse about the lengths of copyrights. Only the suits and those of us that think the suits shouldn't be able to continue to buy ever increasing control whenever their profits are threatened.

And there is no "obtaining" a copyright. Copyright is automatic the moment you "put pen to paper"
