What if it only *mostly* works? :) The thing that gets me is... what if the EU/UN/China/whatnot decided that they didn't like the system, and duplicated it under *their* control, and convinced their populations to use their root nameservers? On the one hand, we want it as "free as possible". On the other hand, what lets us maintain control is our economic presence (and, in this day and age, our military, ever-ready to go to war on a pretext). People want to get at American servers.
