IMO:  The US is steadily headed downhill on this count.  But I have to
agree with the history part.  Hell, the US practically invented the
concept of rights.

I agree.  Let anyone run a "root" nameserver (which is actually
already the case).  Anonymous network I2P is using their own
distributed nameserving system to serve .i2p domain names.  The EFF's
Tor uses something similar (but less useful).
