Is there map software for Linux? As in, I tell it a location, and it
gives me a map?
Yes. Any web browser.
Alas, Google Maps nowhere near approaches the featurefulness and
usefulness of a program like, say, Microsoft's Streets and Trips or
that Rand McNally stuff. And Google Maps is not available offline.
Being that location based search and ubiquitous wireless internet
access go hand in hand, and that google has already started working on
both issues (maybe only in the bay area so far but we all know what's
coming.....) I bet you that the monetary motivation will eliminate
both of those complaints within a few years or less. It's the ultimate
on demand add system.

Not quite. It requires Internet access. That doesn't do one any good
when they're traveling and don't have access to the Internet. There are
plenty of good Mapping programs for Windows such as those mentioned
above (we like Street Wizard) which have tons of info and can be updated
on a regular basis.
I also wish there were something equivalent for Linux. Now that I have a
laptop, Mapping software is on my short list of "Why doesn't Linux
Have..." - not too far below OCR software that works for under $1000.
