I have SBC DSL and when I call, usually to see if there's a downed router in
my area, I get the tech on the phone and say:

"I don't need tech support, I run Linux, so can you just tell me if there's
a router down in my area?"

I used to have cable modem, got a guy on the phone once that actually knew
about Linux and he had no problem helping me. Just dumb luck I guess.
