I've recently become a believer in Ubuntu. I put the latest alpha of Dapper Drake on my new Dell laptop and the distro found and properly configured all the nifty goodies on it. It's not an Atheros chip for the wifi, but I did some searching and it seems that with Ubuntu, madwifi "Just Works(r)". If you're not feeling so adventurous as to put an alpha release on your system, Breezy Badger should be about the same for the Atheros/madwifi.
