I just apt-get'd bittorrent to my Debian laptop and can't

I get about 1kb of the file then nothing more.

Must I open some incoming ports or something complicated
for this beast called BitTorrent??!?

I am sure that there is a FAQ for BitTorrent that expounds on this
subject. To make the story short, BitTorrent clients use one or more
ports in the range 6881-6899. Perhaps the software that you
downloaded has a way to check for suitable firewall open-ness.

My favorite BT client is Azureus, which has nice graphics and GUI
controls, and uses only port 6881.
