It has been a while since I did a dist-upgrade, admittedly.  I
expect that the move from stable to testing or unstable will be
messy, though.  The upgrade from stable to stable is the one that
they test and care about, naturally.  In the past I have had
exactly the same kind of mess.  I resolved a lot of it similarly,
too.  Ran the dist-upgrade several times, then manually dealt with
the ones that didn't want to behave.  Dependencies and whatnot
really are in flux in those versions.  These kinds of issues aren't
weird at all.
