Depends of what kind of packages do you have. The problems come when you
have "homemade" .debs, or tar.gz installed by yourself. Then, either
because apt is not aware of the files or because of bad packaging such
errors occur.

e.g Many people install firefox using package from mozilla instead of
the deb from stable. If you install a debianized firefox later from
unstable, there you have the conflict, because apt does not know anyhing
about the previous firefox

Anywaym IMHO, to make a clean transition is very rare, unless you have a
very
clean system as well. If you know more or less what are you "-f
orcing" you can minimize the danger.

The same. Actually the diference between testing and unstable is small
compared with stable / testing. Normally, that difference is two weeks
or so. Anyway, I do not expect those versions to work seamlessly.
That's why they are "unstable". I use unstable and sometimes upgrades
perfectly and others I have to use aptitude to know what's wrong.
However, I must say that aptitude/apt seems to be smart enough to not to
break the system unless you force anything

If your final intention is to work witch unstable, of course yes.
Actually, what I do is to install directly unstable (or testing) with
the net-installer from debian. It asks wich repos do you want to use,
and when the process finishes, you have a testing/unstable instalation.
No need to to dist-upgrade
