That's one of my favorite gripes too! I accuse authors -- in attempting
 to show _realistic_ examples (which usually aren't very useful to _me_)
-- of sadly missing the opportunity to explain the purpose and use of
something sufficiently clearly that any competent practitioner can adapt
it to his use.

In some cases, I suppose the thing they are trying to explain has such a
poor design model or API that a simple example is impossible.
