Seriously, I can't be the first person to think of this idea.
Couldn't we avoid all this by just storing code in some neutral
format that allowed viewing in multiple formats?  You like braces?

foobar? Fine, open up editor.conf again....

No, it doesn't work. People whine about the parentheses in Lisp or the end tags in XML.

There is no pleasing everyone.  I see no need to try.

Besides, whitespace is not "neutral". Quite often, I use it to align elements that I consider related.
