What's broken wrt to merges in SVN? I know it handles the simple cases of merges when I update or try to check something in, so I'm assuming that's not the case you're talking about. Which, I suppose, means I either don't know what you're talking about, or I've only been blessed with simple merge cases. :)

Look at the OpenSolaris reasoning behind using Mercurial.

Look at the FreeBSD reasoning behind using Perforce for some of the kernel development that touches a lot of files.
