30-42 inches is optimal for row placement, it depends mostly on your equipment. A plant every 9 inches is optimal. Any less than that and ear size is affected. Get too close (6 inches or less) and yield will drop dramatically. Any more and pollination becomes an issue.

North-south is best for sunlight, but you also need to be careful of prevailing winds in your area. Green snap can ruin a field.
