Luckily, if you don't have big requirements, you can get around that. I run a small 266 MHZ PPC server, a Kurobox[1], 24/7. I also have two Linksys wireless routers running 24/7 (both run Linux). Add about 5 hours of laptop usage daily, and my power bill totals up to only $20-25 a month (1 BR apt), most of which is probably the refrigerator.
My server is not powerful, but it has more than enough oomph for what I use it for (backup & music server). I specifically wanted to use an appliance-like server so that the power usage would be minimal. It doesn't take long for "real" computers to start costing real money.
