I'm not a programmer, per se. When I do write code, though, I
always reach for vim. This isn't another editor war. I have
played with eclipse, but was put off by the fact that I couldn't
manipulate text as well in it. If it weren't for the fact that
text editing is 90% or more of what I'm doing with it, it wouldn't
be such a negative thing for me.

I'm somewhat surprised that all the strong, opinionated debates
over editors hasn't inspired anyone to write libraries to allow
text/cursor manipulation matching vi/emacs/whatever. I would
prefer to actually just have the option of using vim and having
eclipse work with it (just like good ol' mutt). But, if eclipse's
editor worked the same as vi, that would be great, too.

What would be the difference between extending eclipse or emacs,
and writing a plugin for vim? Are there significant differences?

There's only one thing I'd really like to implement in the way of
extending the editor - a class browser. Only class browser I've
used is the one in eclipse, and it saved me a lot of typing.
