Ah, I see. I was thinking more like a band at a club where you may only get to play through your own amp or you may not want to use the venue sound system because it <cough>sucks<cough> is suboptimal.
I agree though. If you are going through multiple stages, you want the best quality amp at the start.
If the musician can't hear himself, turn up the stage monitor.
As an interesting question, how many live venues actually have a decent sound system? Something like, say, the Casbah? Is that considered a decent system or would you have to basically bring everything you have in?
A novice engineer with the best, top-of-the-line gear probably can't do any better than a seasoned veteran using mid-range or even low-end equipment.

So no, you always want the equipment that produces the best sound, not the equipment that is more powerful/louder. The, "but it goes to 11" argument is silly.
