I don't really have numbers but I think the spammers are getting better at fooling the filters. I get all kinds of messages that look like psuedo news stories that have key words like V-I--A-G-R*A! or LxIxPxIxTxOxR embedded as links in text that might be very hard for a spam filter to grok. Or thinks like Very often we all need some help in times of need. Even the best of us aren't always up to the task that we are given. We may well want to very much but rising to the challenge can be more than we are able to do. Just a guess. I am surprised that they don't just grab old messages from email archives and retransmit them with their messages encoded but easily visible to a human.
