The rewritable drive has a rewritable disc (with old files I don't care
about).

The command mounts the disc, but ro. I know I've done a rewrite before
on this type of disc, but I don't know why I can't get it now. Anyone
know what I should try?

This is a rewriteable CD? It doesn't use the same software interface
that you use for hard drives. It goes through ISO9660 layout with
something like K3B or other CD creation software.
