I'll have to look into this further real soon (especially considering
we're having a series of meetings about ERP systems complete with demos
and sales pitches). I've bookmarked it. (Gotta love this list and the
Lan's on it :) )
I was finally able to install and do some evaluation of Compiere a
couple months ago. It looked like it would do the job. Unfortunately the
company did not want to spend the paltry $50 for the manual so I could
get a real handle on the system. I installed the version that uses MySQL
MAX (SAP R3 Certified version of MySQL) with complete source code.
Like the web site above says, systems that meet your exact business
needs are difficult to come by. Customized solutions lock you in to the
vendor for life. One of our issues is that the system used *MUST* work
with our embedded software loading system which is written in Java and
uses MySQL. It not only uses the database to figure out what to load
(flash) into our embedded systems, but also for tracking production
yields, failure data, etc. Any system selected will require development
time in order to support this part of our business.
Just to note that some of us are not completely familiar with TLAs
such as ERP.
It took only a little bit of Google search to find
< http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise_resource_planning >
As a side note, most of the hits within my archives of this mailing
list were for powERPoint.
