I'd love to know what those arguments are.

If I recall correctly, the gist of it was something like:

1) the potential applicant is foolhardy and rushes right in thinking,
"Wow, I'd like to make that much money", or

2) the potential applicant has a head about them and will not rush
right in. In this case, if they don't know the job and what it
entails (i.e. if they're inexperienced) they won't know how much to
ask for and either won't apply at all or will be detected in the
interview process.

It's probably worth mentioning that the hirer who told me this was
inexperienced as a hirer, for one, and worked at a small company, for
two. Both things would make a difference, I would think.

Usually, no salary range = they want to get you in the door without
knowing what crap they want to pay so they can try to talk the position
up as much as possible. Comes under the heading of "Silly Games" for
me, and I don't play ;-)

That's my view.
