I dropped PacBell when they tried to make me pay an additional deposit
when they screwed me on a phone bill and disconnected me. That was when
I switched to Cox for my phone (already had cable modem). I've been
happy with my phone service ever since.

Has never happened to us. The power has gone out, but we have never lost
phone service as a result (No power for the cordless phones does not
count. This is why a backup phone with a cord is a Good Thing).
