I believe the context is exactly where the word 'quiesce' fits. In my
case, neither acquiesce nor quiesce are especially common words in my
usage vocabulary, but acquiesce would be more familiar, so I would be
likely to make the same unconscious substitution, giving a slightly
inappropriate, slightly humorous malapropism.

As one who was in on the beginning of this thread, I can say only that
I had to wait several seconds for my disk drive tio acquiesce.
Otherwise I would have beaten it to death, or at least done something
drastic like reformatting it.

The O.E.D. shows usage of "quiesce" as a verb dating back to 1833,
predating by a decade or more the adjective "quiescent".
