Status report: During the football, I had foobared the wireless on my laptop. In all honesty, it had always been a kludge. Now it was a broken kludge.
Using your excellent guide (and lots of script reading), I had glimmerings of understanding, and got the laptop back. It's still a hack, in that I turned ONBOOT off and added ifup to rc.local _after_ my script that makes the wireless device. But the chain of calls is much closer to rational and doesn't depend on anywhere as much luck. I just need to generalize it later.
