I'd argue that we're not really talking about the merits of Perl, Python, Lisp, Java and friends purely on the basis of the languages themselves, but the platforms. The individual languages are really not interesting at all, but the vast libraries that are, generally, included with the language are the things that really let you get work done.

Languages are just syntax. Once you wrap your head around it, it's boring, and most languages really aren't that different from each other (with the possible exception of paren-happy Lisp.)
