A full HD stream takes about 8Mbit.
I get 15Mbps to my house already, it doesn't seem to me that
bandwidth is much of a bottleneck anymore....
Lucky you. The rest of us are sitting at about 6Mb, tops. The best
upload I can even purchase is about .5Mb.
When I go back to Johnstown, PA, those numbers change to 1.5Mb/.1Mb.
We do not have anywhere *near* enough bandwidth to kick off the next
generation of applications. Which, BTW, won't come online until
100Mb/10Mb ... even 15Mb down isn't enough.
The second problem is that the backhaul isn't big enough, either.
Bittorrent by the *tiny* number of users who use it on the anemic upload
speeds we have is capable of soaking up a major percentage of backhaul
capacity. If you open the local pipe further, that will overload.
The bandwidth/killer app combos were:
.05 Mb -> web browsers
.5 Mb -> Napster
5.0 Mb -> BitTorrent
???? -> ?????
The next required jump to killer app is 50Mb. The Asian countries are
going to hit that first and reap the benefits.
