 Are they really committed?

Committed to what? And why do you assume that commitment is an eternal state, unchanging regardless or new information, new and unforeseen personal and social changes, environmental, governmental, financial, health changes?

Because of the part that goes "until death us do part". If you think of this physical life as eternity, then yes, marital commitment should be an "eternal state, unchanging regardless" of sickness or health, richer or poorer, good times or bad, etc. Although, in regard to governmental changes, I seem to recall that there was a period in history somewhere where marriage was banned. What did the Christians do? They paralleled marriage as closely as they could without it being officially that which was banned.

 Is their relationship a secret?

Chris

Depends on who's asking. And why.

In the setting I just mentioned, I think that was their feeling too.
