You can install kubuntu...which is kde+ubuntu, or xubuntu, which is
xfce+ubuntu. Or you could install ubuntu-server, and then apt-get
install kubuntu-desktop(kde), ubuntu-desktop(gnome), or
xubuntu-desktop(xfce). It's pretty simple. You can also install normal
Ubuntu and use synaptic to install kubuntu-desktop, and you'll get a
choice between kde/gnome. Can't imagine it being any simpler.

Correct me if I'm wrong-  doesn't Ubuntu use Gnome?  I won't even look at it
until it works with KDE without fiddling (a checkbox at install time is
fine, more fiddling than that is not).  I just really dislike almost every
UI decision Gnome makes.
