So long as there's air movement underneath, I think you might. If you
don't mind replacing it frequently.

Light-colored shingles work better than dark, after all.

Another problem with screens and tarps is that you can't walk on
'em... which makes roof maintenance difficult.

A friend of mine's roof has vents in between each rafter along the eves and a vent all along the ridge. Air flows in under the eves, along just under the roof, and out at the top. It cools the roof to reduce radiation from it onto the ceiling below, and allows hot air to get out.
