would be on the low side and anything more than 1000:1 is in the range
of diminishing perceived benefit (for common usage).

Um, except when you take into account HDDVD. Quite a few DVD's need a good gamma kick due to poor LCD contrast.

Right now, the LCD sweet spot seems to be 1680x1050. I picked up a 1680x1050 2ms 3000:1 from Fry's for right around $300.

1920x1080 was almost 3 times as much--now I think they're about 2x.

Presumably 1680x1050 are 1920x1080 (1080p) HDTV screens that had too many defects but could be cut into a smaller panel. Thus, they have lots of them and nowhere to really dump them.
