I think repeated re-recording of data onto newer and newer technologies
will always be the way to go.  I currently store everything on hard drives
and every couple of years move it along.

I would advise against disabling smartd in general. I have had good luck
with it and it has correctly warned me of failing drives. I have not heard
of any cases where it cried wolf incorrectly but that doesn't mean it
hasn't happened. Can you do a badblocks scan or use some other tool to
test the drives?
