I think repeated re-recording of data onto newer and newer technologies will always be the way to go. I currently store everything on hard drives and every couple of years move it along. > No remarks on whether disabling smartd is valid or whistling dixie? I would advise against disabling smartd in general. I have had good luck with it and it has correctly warned me of failing drives. I have not heard of any cases where it cried wolf incorrectly but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Can you do a badblocks scan or use some other tool to test the drives? -- Tracy Reed Check out my blog and photos at http://tracyreed.org This message is cryptographically signed for your protection.
