I just brought up a RAID 1 on PATA on a 500 Gigabyte disk in about 5 hours (effectively a full dd). Raw throughput on the disks (40 Mibibytes/s) would have made that about 3 1/2 hours by itself. The machine is an old 750 MHz Celeron.

I also zeroed the old drives using dd.  That took about 4 hours.

Of course, I use FreeBSD.

Perhaps this is an indictment of the Linux PATA drivers rather than PATA itself?
