A smoker, taking a "smoke break" 6 times a day, for 5-10 minutes each time, is getting nearly an hour of paid break time, when most other employees only get 20-30 minutes (excluding lunch, if your employer pays for your lunch break).

Are you suggesting that you never stop and chat with a coworker at the next desk about the latest blockbuster movie or best selling book? I know in my office, non-work related conversations can easily last more than 10 minutes. Personally, I don't begrudge anyone a break they need, so long as they are pulling their own weight.

It's equity. Either everyone gets all that time, or no one does.

That's fine.
Myself, I play table tennis during the day.
In close matches, I can be gone from my desk for a half hour.
I figure that makes up for a few smoke breaks.

Or make the smoker clock out for each smoke break.

What a depressing place to work that would be.
