Indeed, mutt does support imap. I have set it up to do so.

It's obnoxious enough that I never use it... I ssh into the box, if
possible, and use mutt locally instead, and if I can't do that, I
don't use mutt, I use Mail.app, or Netscape Mail, or Thunderbird, or
just about anything else.
