I use regularly use mutt with SSL to connect to my imaps server.
Of course, there has to be a server running with SSL for that to be
an option.

Mutt support for imap isn't very pretty, in general, but it is
doing well otherwise. I usually just bounce on the space key to
find out the next folder with new mail. I rarely navigate the
menu list of folders.

What I wish mutt had was access to a utility that would let me
define/use "virtual folders" like evolution does. I'd just use
evolution if it weren't for the fact that I generally keep my mail
up in a long-running screen session. Then, additionally, there's
the fact that evolution was bloated, slow, and generally annoying
last time I used it. Ain't planning to try it again.
