So I am looking for a laptop and I obviously don't want to pay the microsoft
tax. I've found a few sites like system76, zareason, shoprcubed, and
mgepconline. I don't want to buy a laptop that will crumble while I am
lugging it from class to class, but I don't expect to be throwing it against
a wall. I was wondering If anyone knows of any good reviews or has personal
experiences with shopping for a linux laptop that they would like to share.
Also, I am not looking for a dinky little laptop, I code, and I am used to
dual monitors and it's a painful enough for me to use the single 1280x1024
monitor at work - So I would prefer a laptop with something around 1050 res.
but not weight a ton like my last laptop (while I'm at it, throw in a
perpetual motion machine for under 2 grand). Thx in advance

I second those sites. I got my Asus Z71V from GamePC a couple of years
ago (15.4" 1680 x 1050 Widescreen, 128 MB GeForce Go 6600, 2.0 GHz
Pentium M in Centrino package, 100 GB HDD dual-booting XP Pro/FC6, and
512 MB RAM only cuz I cheaped out. I bought it sans OS although GamePC
will put pretty much whatever OS you want on it for the retail price of
the OS.
It's not the lightest, but then I think half of the weight of my laptop
backpack[1] is from all the laptop geek crap I carry (CD's, APC
surge protector, pocket router, various cables, etc.).
I'm happy enough with the laptop that I'd buy another. The quality is
higher than I've seen from other vendors I've looked at except IBM, it
met my specs, has good battery life (>3 Hrs in my usage), easy Wifi
configuration (as in it just works), sound works great, big enough
monitor for my old eyes, and a good enough keyboard that my fingers just
fall where they should. Linux support is pretty darned good (acpi4asus
project and others [2]), most drivers are now in-kernel. Price was just
a hair over two grand after tax.
And FarCry plays just fine on it! ;)
[1] Outdoor Products' AirWay is the best ever laptop backpack. Available
online and carried locally at REI.
