I assume the D-Link is a Cable/DSL router. And its "Uplink" port is the
port dedicated to connect to the modem. On that assumption that
connection should work.

Switch's uplink port
I think this should work, but you may need (or should not be using, but
are) a cross-over cable. All newer switches have auto-sensing ports, so
that cross-over cables between them aren't needed/don't matter.

Anything (cat 5) DOESN'T work
This should certainly work. I.e, any computer connected to the switch
should be able to talk to any other computer connected to the switch
(all being on the same subnet - routing configs on boxes aside).
Is there something I'm missing here?
