I just browsed through the maintenance manual for my T30 Thinkpad.  I
believe that the USB ports are controlled by the I/O board, which _is_
a field-replaceable unit.  However, you have to first remove some 17
other FRU's in sequence to get to it.  Starting with the battery pack,
and ending with the system board.  Doesn't sound like a good exercise
for the amateur repairman.
