I'd be more apt to blame the mouse, in this case. I've had a couple of
them go bad -- sometimes you plug them in and they work, other times
they don't. It's either the cable or the logic board inside the mouse,
but either way I'd try replacing the mouse before replacing anything
inside the computer. It's definitely an easier solution, and it's
always good to have a spare mouse in the event it's not broken and you
lose one or it bites the dust and breaks.

If I remember correctly, he said that he has more than one mouse already
and that they all behave in similar fashion.
