It's mostly just an old account I've held onto, but it also allows
me to give out an e-mail address that isn't obviously connected to
my own personal domain and mail server. I use it mostly for
automated e-mail newsletters and mail lists I don't particularly
trust.

The original point I was trying to make, however, is
simply that using gmail together with a personal server:
 A) doesn't require synchronization headaches.
 B) will allow you to keep an old gmail address, and still ditch
    the webmail interface if desired.
