My AT&T 2wire DSL modem/router crapped out yesterday, and I'm not sure if the problem is with the router itself or the power
supply/AC adapter. I'd like to try a new adapter before I replace
the router; does anybody know where I might be able to find a
compatible one locally, and preferably cheaply?

Shouldn't that be covered by AT&T?

I don't think so. This particular piece of hardware I bought off eBay (about a year ago) as an upgrade to the one I originally got from AT&T back when I started service.

I'm planning to call AT&T today to see what they might be able to do, but I'm looking into every avenue at once so I can restore the connection ASAP.

So... location for cheap power adapters, anyone?

I have been down this road a few times. Take the DSL Modem/Router and the power supply to Radio Shack.

They should be able to determine the voltage, amperage, and type (AC or DC) from the adapter. Radio Shack now sells the adapter tips separately so you need the modem/router for them to determine the correct tip to go with the adapter. I won't insult anyone by explaining polarity. If you need to consider it it should be on the adapter.

I did this the first time I had a similar problem. Paid less than $25 Plugged everything in and got back up and running in a matter of minutes. A few months later SBC (now AT&T) got back to me to repair it. I had forgotten all about it. I explained what I had done. They insisted on verifying the adapter for their equipment was bad (I had kept it) . They gave me a new one which I had them test. When they left I replaced it with the RadioShack one and placed their's in my spare parts cabinet for future needs.

Worked great for years until they insisted on upgrading my DSL modem/router.

Good Luck!

PS. This approach works almost universally for any AC or DC wall-wart type adapter. You used to be able to buy them with multiple settings and multiple heads with a polarity slide-switch but I guess Radio Shack wasn't making enough money off of those.
