This is part of a not-completely-ubiquitous "standard" format (a Red
Book extension[1]) called CD-TEXT that allows textual data regarding
individual tracks or the disc as a whole to be store directly on the
media. However, it hasn't been utilized for all discs due in part to
its spotty implementation in hardware players; in addition, software
players can often access CDDB/FreeDB even if they support CD-TEXT,
which makes the on-disc textual data redundant.
(redundant for software players with said access, that is, but *not* for
anything stand-alone)
