I supplied root password.
mount worked.
df did not.
man fsck did not work.
fsck did not give me a list of options.  It just took off running.

These days, before entering the root password I'd hit the reset button and boot to a live CD. Then you've got all the tools at your disposal -- memtest, badblocks, fsck, etc.
