Perhaps people we so numbed as to have bad pre-AJAX webmail interfaces were that they found the AJAX ones better by comparison. I haven't found anything that comes even close to matching the productivity I find with 'mutt' as my email client. I spent about a year using several GUI clients, settling on thunderbird. I recently switch back to mutt and freed up quite a bit of time I was previously reading email. I get a large amount of email I have to notice but not necessarily read (such as lkml).
