Fedora, at least, backs you into an interesting corner using LVM.  You
end up with a small boot partition, and all of the rest of the drive
as a single LVM volume group, containing one volume with the swap
partition and one volume with the root file system partition.  That's
all.

So when you want to any repartitioning of that disk, you have to
figure out how to shrink the root partition.  Of course this is much
easier in these days of bootable live systems or bootable rescue CDs.
But I don't think you can shrink the root partition while it is in
use.
