I notice that Firefox and Opera have the same nasty behavior when
downl oading plain *.gz files (not tar.gz, or .tgz, I think).

1. The .gz is uncompressed. Another case of unwanted favors! :-(
2. The filename is left as .gz, causing additional consternation. :(

Now, Epiphany works as desired/expected. And wget works fine.

Does anybody know how I can turn off this unwelcome unrequested favor?
For firefox:

Edit -> Preferences -> Content -> File Types -> Manage.

Set BZ2, GZ, TGZ, Z options to "Save to Disk".

That sounded reasonable and very promising, but when I go to
Edit -> Preferences -> Content -> File Types -> Manage
I see a dialog with a search line, and an empty table with (3) column
headings
  Exten File Type Action
There doesn't seem to be any way to add lines???? :-(
(feeling stupid) am I missing something?

This is FF 2.0.0.10

I just ran FF 2.0.0.11 (you should upgrade) after moving .mozilla to dot_mozilla and see the same blank box. I must have inherited a mimeTypes.rdf file at some point that let me turn this off.

I think the inability for users to add mime-types has been a bone of contention for some time. It seems like a silly decision. Sometimes, but not always, they show in in the helper applications. Often they're just buried in the mimeTypes.rdf file.

Just to top it off, files outside .mozilla also seem potentially to affect this - about:config seems to show that the helpers.global_mime_types_file (/etc/mime.types) and helpers.private_mime_types (~/.mime.types) are also used.

Let us know how the Mime Edit plugin works.
