What is the ATI chip that is in your laptop?
Thinkpad T60:
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 or X1500
These are two different controllers - you can't have both in a
thinkpad at the same time. If you've got the GMA 950 then I can tell
you how to do this pretty simply. Which is it?

Thanks. I appreciate any help you can give. How can I tell what video
card this Thinkpad T60 has? lspci doesn't help much...
% lspci | grep ATI
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device
7145
Looks like you have a MOBILITY RADEON X1400 (M54 7145), and need to use
the fglrx driver. See:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Gutsy_Installation_Guide#Enable_.22restricted.22_Repository
You can download debian package(s) from restricted repository:
Enable "restricted" Repository (System > Administration > Software
Sources. Check "Proprietary Drivers for Devices (Restricted)" box.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-generic restricted-manager
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
sudo depmod -a
Or install using "manual" method after downloading driver at:
