Hm. The Intel drivers I was using this with *are* open source. If ATI can't open their drivers at least they are adhering to standards by making their closed driver work the same as an open one. I've found that you can minimize or eliminate proprietary drivers by choosing your hardware carefully. I'm able to use open video drivers because I ordered a thinkpad with the Intel video, knowing in advance I'd be running Linux on it and not wanting to deal with the headaches I'd heard other people describe with the ATI video.
